History of Inspiration

She is by Desert King (a winner of the Irish Derby and Irish 2,000 Guineas) out of Tugela by Riverman (USA). Tugela was also the dam of the Australian stakes-winners, Musket and Valkyrie Diva. Makybe Diva is owned by South Australian tuna fisherman Tony Šantić, who named her after five of his employees – Maureen, Kylie, Belinda, Diane, and Vanessa – by taking the first two letters from each of their names. Makybe Diva is a British-bred, Australian-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who became the first horse to win the Melbourne Cup on three consecutive occasions (2003, 2004, and 2005). In 2005, she also won the Cox Plate. Makybe Diva is the highest stakes-earner in Australian horse racing history, finishing with winnings of more than A$14 million upon her retirement in November 2005. She is one of only five horses to have won the Cup more than once, and the only mare among the list of multiple winners. She is also one of only 14 female horses (11 mares and three fillies) to have won the Cup.

Artist: Michael Legge-Wilkinson

Medium: Oil on Linen

Description: Representational portrait comprising three images capturing the spirit of Makybe Diva’s historic win in the 2005 Melbourne Cup. The portrait was painted for a limited edition print licensed by the Victorian Racing Club on behalf of the owners.

Provenance: The artist has held the portrait in his own collection since completion in 2009 and hesitated on previous offers to enable the right time to manifest. That time is now with the painting being sold in support of the artist’s portrait of Tenzin Gyatso, the fourteenth Dalai Lama. Brushwork on the Dalai Lama portrait will commence in 2019 and is being painted as a gift to the people of Tibet for the Tibet Museum in Dharamsala. Michael Legge-Wilkinson is an independent artist represented in private and corporate collections worldwide including but not limited to Australia, Brazil, China, England, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Hong Kong, Israel, New Zealand, South Africa, Switzerland and the United States of America.

Working predominantly in oil, Michael is a master painter with an eye for detail and free flowing brushwork that creates a sense of movement in his representational work. This sense of movement gives the viewer the experience of standing in front of the ‘real thing’ often evoking an emotional response, which, for this portrait has been documented in the short film showing creation of the painting.

Michael focuses exclusively on major works and commissions.
